A PUBLICAN, who has spearheaded a fundraising drive in aid of the Cancer Research Campaign, has toasted regulars who have raised a massive £50,000 for the charity. Brian Whetton, landlord of the Kings Arms, and his wife, April, say cheers to fundraising friends.

Brian Whetton, landlord of the Kings Arms, in Areley Kings, has been raising money at the pub for more than 12 years, following the death of his brother 15 years ago from a brain tumour.

Brian, who also lost his father to cancer, said: "Everyone in the pub knows someone who has died of cancer. They have done all the work and raised the money.

"It's a huge amount for such a small pub. Because it's such a vast amount I feel my customers should get recognition."

He said most of the cash had been raised by an annual fun run - this year's takes place on July 8.

The pub has also staged a series of charity football matches featuring former England star Emlyn Hughes and his all star 11 and actor Adam Woodyatt, who plays Ian Beale in East Enders. Other activities have included pumpkin parties and quiz nights.

Jan West, community fundraiser for Cancer Research in Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire, said the pub was one of her most successful fundraisers.

She added: "It's such a small pub in such a small area, it really is a supreme effort and over so many years."
