ANGRY families whose flats have been plagued by arsonists will voice their concerns at a meeting tonight.

Charland Court resident Louise Jefferies has organised the gathering at Westlands Community Hall, off Farmers Way.

She wants Spa Housing Association to improve safety at its complex, in Shepherds Way, where firebugs struck twice in less than a week.

The latest incident was on Bank Holiday Monday when flames took hold in the ground floor bin cupboard. No-one was hurt but 11 tenants needed to be rehomed.

Miss Jefferies, aged 22, has invited Spa councillors, police, fire officers and housing association representatives to speak from 7.30pm.

The mum-of-one said: "We want flats that are safe to live in. Improved security doors and fire exits are top of the agenda.

"If we don't get action we will hold a protest outside Spa Housing Association's office, in Queen Street."

On Monday, the housing association pledged to install smoke detectors at the flats, although it has no legal obligation to do so.

A spokeswoman said: "The bins were cleared on the Thursday before the fire but tenants or residents must have put a settee and other rubbish in the store over the weekend and we believe arsonists set these alight.

"The fire doors, which are designed to keep the blaze at bay for around half an hour, were all intact and did their job."

The organisation plans to resite the bin stores. Workers are currently cleaning the flats, reconnecting electricity and measuring for new windows.
