A CONCERNED councillor is calling for closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in a historic part of town - following a wrecking spree by vandals.

Droitwich Spa town councillor Terry Spencer (Con, Droit.Central) wants cameras in Gurneys Lane.

On Thursday morning, he was contacted by two shopkeepers who found the trail of destruction.

Vandals had bricked a window, smashed Christmas lights attached to buildings, pulled cables down and taken slats out of a bench and thrown them at shop fronts.

The day before, Cllr Spencer had spoken with Wychavon District Council's town centre manager, Lew Hammond, about improving the area and brightening up the flowerbeds.

Cllr Spencer, co-owner of Spa-Tronics, in High Street, said: "Regular vandalism in Gurneys Lane has been a problem for years and the only way it can be stopped is by installing CCTV cameras.

"I've been informed a system would cost around £10,000 and a district council source has told me the cash is not currently available. We need action."

Spa beat manager PC Alun Jones is working with residents to combat anti-social behaviour.

He told the Advertiser: "I would like to remind those involved that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated.

"Anyone caught vandalising public property will be dealt with accordingly."

A Wychavon spokeswoman said: "CCTV in Droitwich was reviewed by the police and the council last year.

"Gurneys Lane was considered as a possible site for a camera, but it was eventually decided the Westlands shopping centre was to be the main priority.

"The Westlands camera will go live shortly."
