A DRIVER has blasted wheel clampers after a disabled pal was forced to pay a £95 release bill.

Anne Saunders says a lack of parking spaces at the Perdiswell Young People's Club meant drivers had to leave their cars on double yellow lines while they attended a Weight Watchers meeting yesterday.

But she said disabled Barbara Chidlow, who walks with a stick, should not have been penalised by being clamped in the private road.

"It's enough when you're disabled without people doing this," said Mrs Saunders.

"The police said she wasn't doing anything wrong, but because she was on a private road there's nothing they can do.

"She had her disabled badge on display and there was nowhere else to park - what was she supposed to do?

"There are only two disabled spaces in the Perdiswell Young People's Club car park. We can't park in the indoor bowling club so the road was the only place to go."

Mrs Saunders said the meeting finished at 11.30am, and the other disabled woman - along with several other drivers - left the Droitwich Road centre and discovered the clamps.

"She was in tears. She didn't have any money on her and her daughter had to pay it," said Mrs Saunders.

"Nobody came in and said they were going to clamp. It's ludicrous that people do this sort of thing.

"It beggars belief.

"They need to be disabled themselves to understand what it's like."

Midlands Parking Contracts, which carried out the clamping, said cars parked along the narrow road caused a hazard.

"We're under instructions from the landowners," said a spokesman. "It's an access for emergency services.

"Although drivers may be disabled they don't count on private land.

"It's still blocking access, which will be needed by fire engines and ambulances in an emergency."
