THE leader of the Labour group on Worcester City Council has been deposed.

Councillor Adrian Gregson has taken over from Coun David Barlow, who took over the reins two years ago.

Coun Gregson, the county branch secretary of the public sector union UNISON, said the move had followed a group meeting. "I'd like to thank group colleagues for their trust and confidence, which I'll try my best to fulfil," said Coun Gregson, who represents St Barnabas ward.

"I'd also like to pay tribute to David's work as leader. We've come through some difficult times." He said his aim was now to campaign for Labour parliamentary candidate Mike Foster's re-election and success for Labour in the county elections next month.

"We'll then work seriously to regain control of the city, starting with next year's local elections in May," added Coun Gregson.

Fellow St Barnabas ward councillor David Barlow was picked as Labour leader following the May 1999 elections. Previously, Coun Margaret Wills had been leader. Coun Barlow was not present at last night's annual council meeting.

After the meeting he said he was too busy to speak about the issue. He could not be contacted as the Evening News went to press today.

The deputy Labour leader on the council will be Coun Roger Berry, who holds the post at the moment.
