I WRITE in support of the letter from GT Harrison regarding the 30mph enforcement now established on the A441 from Astwood Bank to the Crabbs Cross roundabout (Advertiser, April 4).

A number of us who live along that road urged the county council to place signs reminding drivers of the speed limit.

This was refused but eventually some temporary plastic signs were tied to posts as a token gesture. These were then removed and the speed limit ignored.

Obviously, what is needed is either roadside reminder notices erected or carriageway markings indicating the 30mph limit.

As this has been done in most of the areas in the locality, I fail to see why it should not be done on this stretch of road.

As Tom Wareing pointed out in the previous week's Advertiser, with dangerously narrow footpaths and sections of narrow road, it is vital that action is taken to safeguard pedestrians and other road users.

Reminding drivers of the speed limit is an essential element in that safeguarding. Hiding behind some obscure clause in either the Highway Code or traffic regulations is no excuse when lives are at risk.
