I AM concerned about the content of many of the letters published by the Malvern Gazette. The former town councillor, Adrian Ward (Postbag, February 16), referred, among other things, to the recent Malvern Mailbox. If he were to look again he would see that the photographs are of the 'assets' as they are now and that they demonstrate a need for urgent renovation.
Former district councillor Pat Merrick should ask herself why the district council budget requirement has not been substantially reduced following the off loading of the 'assets' transferred to Malvern Town Council.
The present town council is having to deal with a can of worms opened by the previous one.
The press release issued this week outlines the serious problems the town council has to address.
Kevin McCann and Christopher Walsh (Postbag, February 16) would do well to read the report of the district auditor before supporting Mr Ward so generously. Bob and Pam Michaelson may like to know that disabled and elderly people may not wish to be confined to the ground floor of offices and might indeed welcome Malvern's first public building with access for all.
This council must be judged by its actions. These actions cannot be implemented without money.
Income has to be raised by the precept. Town councils do not receive money from the business rates or any Government funding. The district council has handed over most of its responsibility for Malvern town. If the town council does not act, who will?
COUNCILLOR FRANCES VICTORY, Wells Road, Malvern Wells.
