A MAN has tried to abduct a schoolgirl as she walked to a village bus stop.

He struck just after 8am yesterday as the 11-year-old was walking towards the bus stop in Shrawley Road, Fernhill Heath.

A dark blue Metro-type car pulled up alongside her and the driver began talking to her.

A police spokesman said the man tried to persuade the girl to get into his car.

PC Al Birkett, one of the team investigating the incident, said the girl ignored him but the man stepped out of the car, prompting the girl to run home.

PC Birkett said she was shaken by the incident, but not harmed.

He praised her for the way she dealt with the ordeal.

"For the girl this was a frightening experience but very sensibly she did not talk to him," he said.

He said she did not take the registration of the car, but she was confident it had seven digits and began with R1.

The man is described as white, in his mid-to-late 30s, and was wearing generally dark clothing. He had on a cream-coloured baseball cap, which was turned the wrong way round. He had a ring in the right hand side of his nose.

"We've made extensive enquiries in the area, but we'd like to hear from anyone who may have seen what happened or may have information about the identity of this man," added PC Birkett.
