BUS users will be able to wait in comfort after councillors backed a move to install 45 new bus shelters across Redditch.

And the good news for council taxpayer is it won't cost them a penny.

All the shelters will be paid for by a company which will sell advertising space on them.

Batchley councillor Betty Passingham said: "It' great news. The bus company would not put them up and we felt sorry for all those people waiting in the cold, rain and wind.

"Some of them will be cantilever shelters but others will have sides, which is useful in windy areas."

But the council is keeping further details of the project, such as the location of the new stops, under wraps until contracts have been finalised.

But Mrs Passingham said there was a possibility extra stops would also be installed in some areas, improving access for passengers.

She added: "A lot of the old bus stops were being vandalised and we couldn't do anything about them so they were taken down."

It is believed the company which erects the shelters will also maintain them.

The move was rubber stamped at a public and environmental services committee meeting last Tuesday.
