THE death of Mr Douglas Preece in hospital was heard with deep regret, not only by people in Redmarley but over a wide area, as Doug was so well known and connected with so many things during his life-time.
He was born in the parish, where he lived his whole life, and followed his fathers as sexton in the Parish Church, where he and his family worshipped and which played a great part in his life. He also cared for the churchyard and helped with fundraising. Doug was also a great gardener, a lover of growing things and entering local flower shows, Tibberton being one. He was a keen whist player, organising and also acting as MC over a wide 'whist circuit', and was so well liked and respected.
He worked for the Post Office for many years, working as a postman from Staunton Post Office, until it was closed as a sorting office. He also worked with the late Maxwell Bayliss, Funeral Director of Corse, and then with John Hall, Funeral Director of Churcham, until ill health forced his retirement.
His wife Helen died some years ago and he is survived by his two daughters, Gloria and Lynda, and two grandchildren.
