WORCESTERSHIRE'S unemployment rate last year was the lowest since 1992, according to a set of "vital statistics" for the county.

The latest spot-check on the economy, published by the county council and the Chamber of Commerce for Herefordshire & Worcestershire, showed the number of people out of work in April 2000 stood at 6,740.

This equated to 2.5 per cent of the population, the lowest for eight years.

Property prices fluctuated last year, ending up slightly below the national average.

A semi-detached home typically cost £80,950 in July 2000, about £3,500 less than the national equivalent.

In 1999 Worcestershire workers earned below the national average when gross weekly pay was considered - £395.50 for males compared with £442 for Britain as a whole and £282.60 for females, compared with the national average of £326.50.

The average number of hours worked per week was the same in Worcestershire as for the country as a whole, 41.9 hours for males and 37.8 for females.
