POINTS make prizes and Mike Whiteford and Gary Bristow certainly made it count in southern Spain.

The Evesham Golf Club pair were invited to play in the Pyr Marbella Captains Trophy at Alcaidesa club and they topped the stableford scoring charts to win the prestigious annual tournament.

Whiteford and Bristow qualified after winning regional round of a competition open to all captains and past captains of all UK clubs at Cottesmore GC in Sussex.

They were joined on their European adventure by Craycombe past captains Geoff Day and Richard Minton, who were successful in a qualifying round at Telford.

Brilliant sunshine greeted the quartet but the course was generally wet due to heavy rain of the previous week.

Conditions underfoot didn't deter the local pairings and Mike and Gary were joint leaders after the first day with 43 points. Their fellow Evesham members were just three points adrift.

The joint leaders were last out on day two - a situation that called for steadiness under pressure.

Geoff and Richard added 39 points to their first day total to finish in third place but it was Gary and Mike who proved invincible with 41 points as they held off a strong challenge from a Scottish pair, who amassed 42 second time around to add to an opening score of 39.
