100 years ago January 26, 1901
EVESHAM: It was not until the newspapers arrived on Saturday morning that Evesham knew the serious condition in which her Majesty was lying. The grave information therein contained caused a good deal of consternation and though some were hoping our Gracious Sovereign would recover, others felt the end was near. Prayers were offered in All Saints Church on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Her Majesty died at half past six on Tuesday evening.
75 years ago January 23, 1926
FARM AND GARDEN: The Toad and the Farmer. The farmer has no firmer friend than the toad; yet there are few creatures more disliked and despised. Its ugly shape and wart-covered skin are probably to a great extent responsible for its malignment. But its value lies in its diets. Analysis of their stomachs shows fourth fifths of toads' is made up of small insects and animals which are 'undesirable' to the farmer.
50 Years Ago January 20, 1951
Evesham: Apathetic TU. There was an attendance of only nine at the annual meeting of the Evesham and District Trades Council at the Co-operative Hall, Evesham, on Tuesday evening. In his report, the secretary (Mr Harry Core) deplored poor attendances at the Trades Council during 1950, saying that efforts had been made to stimulate greater interest by the engagement of speakers on various trades union topics.
25 years ago January 22, 1976
EVESHAM: Another attempt to persuade Wychavon District Council to bring the starting date of the proposed Evesham swimming pool forward from November to February failed on Tuesday. Members of the council voted to defer the pool for 12 months for financial reasons.
