BOY George, Culture Club frontman turned international DJ, is coming to Worcester.

He is due to play a set at the Torch nightclub on his first visit to the Faithful City on Friday, February 9.

The date is his last in the UK before he heads off the United States for the start of a world tour.

Fans can expect excerpts from his latest Essential Mix, in which he appears on Spreading The Light with The Colein.

Boy George - whose real name is George O'Dowd - shot to world-wide fame in the early 1980s with Culture Club.

The band enjoyed scores of hits, with Karma Chameleon, Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? and Church of the Poison Mind among the most famous.

The singer rapidly became a household name as much for his stage clothes, make-up and music, as his one-liners - once famously saying: "Sex? I'd rather have a cup of tea."

The band broke up in 1986, amid Boy George's drug addiction and the demise of his relationship with drummer Jon Moss, but reformed in 1998, to produce a top five single, I Just Wanna Be Loved, and a new album.

Boy George was not available for comment, but Torch promoter Mike Enea anticipated a sell-out crowd at the 800-capacity Cripplegate Park club.

"He's played at places like God's Kitchen and Sundissential in Birmingham, but this is a first for Worcester," he said.

"There will be huge interest in him coming to play here, especially as it's his last date before his world tour starts.

"He is certainly well-known from Culture Club, but to a younger generation of fans, he is known for progressive and uplifting house tunes," he added.
