FORMER resources director Chris Smith will take over as Redditch Council's new Borough Director, it was announced this week.

Mr Smith, who was previously Deputy Borough Director, replaces Katherine Kerswell, who has become chief executive at Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council.

Mr Smith, 42, is married with two children and has held a number of financial management posts since joining the council as financial services manager in 1991 from South Staffordshire District Council.

He said: "I'm very pleased to have the opportunity to lead the staff side of the council at this exciting time.

"There are a number of developments coming to fruition that will significantly enhance the facilities within the town.

"I am acutely aware we need to continue to build upon the successes of the past and I'm confident this can be achieved as we continue to work closely with the community and our partners in the coming months."

Council leader Albert Wharrad said Mr Smith's appointment to the top job came at an important and interesting time.

"The council is about to embark on a large-scale investment plan for its own housing stock, to take up the role of a partner in a very exciting sports and leisure development at Abbey Stadium and to play its part in relocating its outdoor market to a new, better, permanent site."
