COTSWOLD MP Geoffrey Clifton-Brown has branded plans to investigate a profit-making section of Cotswold District Council as "bizarre madness."
Officials from the Government's Best Value Task Force are coming from Bristol to spend four days in the Cotswolds looking at the district council's land registry department. The aim of the task force is to make sure that councils get the best possible value when they spend public money, but the department already makes a £170,000 profit.
The MP criticised the move as a waste of public resources and has already raised it with ministers. He said: "What will the cost of this be and will the money spent outweigh any benefits to the taxpayer? I am all for ensuring that taxpayers get value for money, but this is a sledge-hammer to crack a nut."
