A KIND police officer has put a smile back on the face of a Charford youngster whose pet pigeon was killed by an air rifle.

PC Bob Ebbitt was so moved after reading the plight of Gary Tolley in the Advertiser/Messenger, he has given the 12-year-old another pigeon.

Gary, of Lyttleton Avenue, had two pigeons before one was killed by an air gun earlier this month -- just one day after a pellet narrowly missed his head.

He has attention deficiency hyperactive disorder and the birds were therapy for him.

Gary had planned to race the pair.

His mum, Donna, said: "Obviously, he is still upset about his first pigeon but is much happier after PC Ebbitt turned up with this one.

"The other pigeon is also happy now it has company again.

"Gary plans to breed them and join a racing club."
