I AM astonished by the suggestion from the Labour leader of Worcestershire County Council about removing statutory religious assemblies in schools by changing the law.
Her main platform was lack of space in some schools and/or lack of staff involvement in others and a suggestion that political correctness would be better personified in a vague 'spiritual context.'
Firstly, problems of space and staff have been ever thus and headteachers have overcome these problems with ingenuity and goodwill.
Secondly, this matter has never been discussed by the elected members of the council and, therefore, one must presume the views expressed are entirely her own.
As a member of that body I consider democracy demands proper debate and I have doubts that such ill considered views would be supported, either by the majority of members or the electorate.
Cllr June Longmuir,
Worcestershire County Council Conservative leader.
