I WAS present at a recent meeting of the St John's Traders/Residents Association held at the YMCA to hear a talk given by two senior city planners on the three current supermarket proposals.

The planners outlined the three plans, namely Asda on the old Cattlemarket, The Butts, Safeways on the old Fruit Market, Hylton Road and Sainsbury's on Swanpool in the centre of St John's.

Members showed some interest in the first two but the Sainsbury's proposal was quite different. The planners were showered with questions concerning road safety for children, pollution, traffic congestion, noise, environmental damage, parking - in fact, the meeting closed with questions still unanswered.

There is little doubt that eventually, St John's will have another supermarket. But location is so important and it was evident that many of the association members were unhappy with Sainsbury's plan.

While conducting a petition to oppose Sainsbury's I had the opportunity to speak to hundreds of likeminded residents.

There is still time to write letters concerning the plans to Mr McNidder, Director of Development Services, Orchard House, Farrier Street, Worcester and I am assured that each one will be photocopied for the committee councillors to see.

I do hope that our council officials and councillors will consider the wishes of many of the central St John's residents and small shopkeepers who have made it clear that we wish to retain our image of "The village in the city".

JOE WALTER,

St John's, Worcester.
