A SPA man who has campaigned for the right to see the stars at night has welcomed plans to improve street lighting.

Peter Findlay, from Manor Close, has been area representative for the Campaign for Dark Skies for four years.

The group aims to cut down light pollution and make the stars visible again in our towns and cities.

Worcestershire county councillor Pam Davey (Con, Droit.South) said the authority will be replacing worn out lights with newer ones that have less glare.

She also intends to ask that future planning decisions in Droitwich Spa take light pollution into account.

Mr Findlay said he hoped the moves would form the basis of a proper policy on light pollution.

He added: "The frustrating bit is that we have the technology to avoid polluting the sky but people aren't using it.

"The universe is where we live. It's a marvellous, fantastic place that we are only just beginning to understand - but most people can't see it from their back garden."

He said light pollution can also harm nocturnal wildlife.
