TEENAGERS are fired up about the opening of a branch of one of the country's fastest growing youth organisations.

The Young Firefighters' Association, which offers young people the chance to learn about the fire brigade, is due to hold its first official meeting in Droitwich Spa tonight.

Many of the first 22 recruits are interested in careers as firefighters, and some of them first learned about the association while on work experience.

But organisers stress that anyone can apply to join the group and it is not a quick route to becoming a firefighter.

The group will learn about fire safety, attend public events, go on a summer camp, and learn skills used by firefighters for a demonstration at the Three Counties Agricultural Show, in Malvern.

The youngsters even have their own fire engine - but the driving will be left to the instructors.

Fifteen-year-old Katie Pugh, from Westmead Close, said: "It's a great opportunity because there aren't many facilities for young people in Droitwich."

Anyone aged from 13 to 17 who is interested in joining next year's intake can call Monty Wild on (01905) 774060 for details.
