A "DANGEROUS" roundabout near Droitwich, where cars have careered off the road into signs and which has failed safety tests, has still not been altered after nine months.

Wychavon district councillor Andrew Christian-Brookes (Con, Lovett), who highlighted the problems last March, said he has received nearly 100 complaints about the traffic island at Stonebridge Cross Business Park, in Kidderminster Road.

The island, currently owned by Birmingham-based Stoford Developments, has since been subject to a safety audit, which confirmed that problems with visibility and signs were leading many drivers to take wrong turns into Big Bear Plastics's factory. Operations manager Brian Jakeman said he saw a crash where a car demolished his sign, tipped up 45 degrees and landed in the car park exit.

He has called on Worcestershire County Council to correct the faults.

He said: "We were told by the developers that something would be done by mid-January but nothing has happened.

"We consider it the responsibility of the council to make the roundabout safe."

He said lorries which take the wrong turning into his car park are forced to reverse back onto the roundabout into fast-moving traffic.

Worcestershire Highways Partnership in Wychavon manager Geoff Cox said it did not have the cash to take over the developers' responsibilities. He added that a meeting has been arranged with Stoford Developments.

Once the roundabout has been brought up to standard, it could then be adopted as county council property.

Stoford Developments construction director Andy Rowbottom said: "We are going through all the normal procedures and we will carry out any necessary work as approved by the county council after our meeting next week."
