REDDITCH MP Jacqui Smith will unveil the latest in music technology at the opening of Arrow Vale Community High School's new Yamaha Music School on Saturday, writes Melina Cannon.

The music school is one of 40 state partnerships being launched by Yamaha this year and will be open to townspeople as well as pupils on roll at the Matchborough school.

Youngsters aged nine and over will benefit from a Play For Keeps course run by a Yamaha-trained teacher, in which they will use CDs and floppy discs to help them practise at home.

The course, which is fully accredited by the London College of Music, also allows students to take part in 'live' music lessons, where they will be able to perform in groups and as soloists.

Head of music Jan Scarratt said: "We are delighted Jacqui Smith is returning to Arrow Vale and will be offering her a free introductory keyboard lesson along with anybody who would like to play, in the hope of introducing as many people as possible to music making."

Ms Smith, a former economics teacher at the Green Sward Lane school, said: "I am very pleased to be able to support this imaginative partnership between Arrow Vale and Yamaha.

"I have happy memories of my time working at Arrow Vale, including playing my cello in school concerts.

"I hope many other young people will be able to experience the fun of learning and playing music."

Headteacher Chris Leech said: "We are already delighted to be working with such a prestigious international company as Yamaha, but to have the minister opening our new music school is the icing on the cake.

"I am confident the hard work, dedication and commitment that has made this happen by all involved will provide high quality opportunities for youngsters and their families.

"And we hope as many people as possible will come and have a go on Saturday."

Anyone interested in attending the free introductory lessons can call Arrow Vale on 526800 from 9am-4pm to book a place.
