WYTHALL residents have been warned to be wary of a new traffic island in the village, after hearing it made have been the cause of a spate of accidents

Parish councillors have told residents to be cautious when using the Hollywood Lane Island on the junctions of Shawhurst Lane and Trueman's Heath Lane.

The island, built last month was designed to reduce the speed of motorists driving on the Hollywood Lane, but councillors heard it now seems to be causing more confusion.

Councillors heard of complaints from residents and workers in the area, maintaining as many as eight shunts had happened within the last month.

Councillor Jill Dyer said: "The island was on the cards for a long time because traffic coming along Hollywood Lane was going very fast and so a traffic calming measure was needed.

"The island in the daytime works perfectly well because everyone can see the signs for the island, but at night time people can't see that there is an island ahead and simply don't stop."

Highways Partnership Manager John Frazer said: "It does take a while for people to get used to a new island but some people are still treating Hollywood Lane as the main road.

"We have already put up additional signs last Friday and more illuminated signs will be going up this week to help the drivers." Mrs Dyer added: "Drivers seem to be confused when giving way to the right."
