FEARS that a Wythall library was set for closure have been quashed by a County Council spokesman, writes Matt Smith.

Parish Councillors were concerned that the library in May Lane, Hollywood would close after £11,000 worth of damage was caused in one year.

Vandals had caused endless amounts of graffiti on the entrance to the library making Parish Councillors fear for it's future.

But the County Council's Library Services Manager Cathy Evans said the library would not be closing because it is a vital service to the community.

She said: "We are waiting for the property department to get back to us about the exact figure of the damage but we have no plans for its closure.

"We are obviously concerned about the property and the amount of money we are spending and at this time we are looking at ways to reduce the damage."

Councillors were also looking at ways of how to reduce the amount of graffiti at the Parish Council meeting last week. (Jan 18)

Councillor Jill Dyer said: "There has been no mention of security cameras at the moment. There are not any cameras at the library, which surprises me because they are obviously deterrents.

"It would be cheap to do as well because there is already electricity there and so no laying of cables would be needed."
