IF AR Price-Higgett thinks Redditch people only care about bingo and the price of a pint (Letters, January 10), then he must walk round with his eyes and ears closed.

The concern expressed by residents over the Redditch school closures, the threat to services at the Alexandra Hospital, building on Headless Cross Green, to name but three issues, prove him wrong.

He derides Conservative prospective Parliamentary candidate Karen Lumley for being born outside Redditch, but he has only to follow the reports in this newspaper to know she has visited every school in Redditch, visited the Alexandra Hospital and met both medical staff and management, gone out with the paramedics, visited old folks' homes and many local businesses and industries.

Most people I have spoken to have received a copy of the opinion survey distributed by the local Conservatives. Surely, if anyone in Redditch knows what Redditch people are really concerned about it must be Karen Lumley.

Finally, Mr Price-Higgett describes Redditch as "too down market to vote Conservative, but once again he has only to look at the report in this very paper to see that in the May 2000 council elections, the Conservatives polled 46 per cent, Labour 34 per cent and Liberal Democrats under 14 per cent.

Having lived in Redditch for 20 years, I object to having my town called 'down-market' by the likes of Mr Price-Higgett.
