A NETWORK of bus services between Redditch and Kidderminster have been hailed a huge success after reports showed a dramatic increase in passengers.

The new services, set up in September, were designed to promote hospital trips and visits for patients and relatives.

And the service has exceeded initial expectations, with an increase of 25 per cent in journeys.

Commercial manager for First Midland Red, Austin Birks said: "This has got to be one of the best examples in the UK for positive partnership working to promote public transport for the good of all members of the community.

"It clearly demonstrates that public transport can play the key role in developing quality alternatives to the use of the car."

The best results have been on the X33 Kidderminster to the Alexandra Hospital where the increase in passengers has been phenomenal with over 50 per cent more journeys than expected.

Mr Birks added: "We are confident that the network can still grow as a result of the positive promotion of all the parties involved particularly as we need to open up more rural routes. It is truly a good news story."

The new bus services were planned and delivered by a partnership involving First Midland Red and other bus operators, the NHS, the County Council and representatives from the Community Council, Community Health Council and advice from many other organisations.
