MP Julie Kirkbride could face a dilemma over who to back in the race to succeed Sir Archie Hamilton as chairman of the Conservative 1922 Committee.
West Worcestershire MP Sir Michael Spicer is being talked about for this powerful role as leader of Tory backbenchers. Sir Archie is planning to step down after the General Election, expected in May.
Other contenders for his post include former Education Secretary Gillian Shephard, current vice-chairman John Butterfill and the secretary, Michael Mates.
Sir Michael has already said he is willing to stand. But Bromsgrove Tory MP Miss Kirkbride is a good friend of Mr Butterfill.
''My loyalties will be tested between Worcestershire and my friendship with John Butterfill,''she says. ''I know John better than Michael.''
