HEREFORD Rugby Club put up a gallant fight before finally going down 17-3 in their home Midlands One clash against table-topping Leicester Lions.

Hereford had the majority of possession in the second-half but were unable to turn it into points.

Leicester, five points clear at the top of the table, broke the deadlock after a quarter of an hour with a try from No 8- Jason Skiffington.

Hereford, however, reduced the deficit in the 38th minute when Finbar Heavens put over a penalty.

Leicester hit back during first half injury time with a converted try.

After the break Hereford regularly tested the well organised Leicester defence but failed to find a way through.

Ten minutes from the end the Lions wrapped up a hard earned victory when flanker Phil Jones went over for an unconverted touchdown.

In Midlands West Two Bromsgrove were in impressive form when they triumphed 40-0 at home to Wolverhampton.

They are now third in the table five points behind table-topping Malvern who have played one match less than the Finstall Park side.

Bromsgrove had the game sewn up by half time in a match in which Wolves never really looked like scoring.

A feature of the home side's performance was their splendid link up play between the forwards and the backs which was regularly rewarded.

Among those to get their name on the try scoring list were James Robson, Tom Churchill, Dave Clarke and Steve Phillips.

Matt Birch took the kicks until he was forced to leave the field on the hour mark with a calf injury.

His duties with the boot were taken over by James Udy.

Bromyard were another local side who beat the weather and their opponents when they triumphed 49-0 against visiting Erdington in North Midlands One.

The result leaves Bromyard in mid-table, although all the sides above them now have a match in hand.

In Midlands Three West South Evesham entertained Keresley and found themselves on the wrong end of a 23-7 scoreline.

They remain second from bottom in the table.
