WORCESTER residents may be quizzed about how often they use bus services.

Consultants working for Malvern Hills District Council have proposed picking 3,000 people in the city entitled to concessionary fares.

They would be asked to keep a "travel diary" for a week in March and then post it in a pre-paid envelope.

The consultants, who expect half those polled to return the diaries, estimate the cost of the exercise to be £5,250. Malvern Hills district councillors are due to vote on whether to go ahead with the proposals when they meet tomorrow night.

From June, district councils will be required to pay for half-fare concessions for elderly and disabled travellers.

"At the moment MHDC doesn't offer concessions," said a spokesman at County Hall.

"MHDC, Worcester City and Wychavon have joined Worcestershire County Council in a partnership before the legislation takes effect.

"Worcester City Council offers a flat-rate concession and so MHDC wants to assess how the current scheme works in Worcester."
