MALVERN Town got the New Year off to the best possible start when they defeated the reigning Banks's Premier Division champions Kington Town 3-0 away with goals from Andy Shepherd (two) and Joe Maidment.

DAN Chesham, aged 17, of Graham Road, Malvern, a former Chase High School pupil now at the Sixth Form College, Worcester, was selected as a prop forward for the Great Britain Colleges Under 19 side to play in South Africa later in the year.

CYCLING star Liam Killeen dominated the Junior National Cyclo Cross Championship at the Foxhall Stadium, Ipswich, lifting the title over one and a half minutes clear of his nearest rival.

THE Chase High School Under 16 hockey team joined a select few who have qualified for the National indoor and outdoor finals in the same season.

MOUNTAIN bike racer 17-year-old Robert Spragg, of Westlyn Close, Malvern, won the National Trophy Cyclo-cross Series with an unblemished four wins from four starts.

FEBRUARY

MORGANS' skittler Steve Hodges had a night to remember bowling at Willie Thornes when he flattened 62 pins in five legs. Steve's scores were 12 spare, 14 spare, 8, 15 spare and 13 spare.

LEDBURY Town's Robbie Colwell had his shooting boots on for the home Banks's Division One South fixture with Bewdley Town scoring all Ledbury's goals in a 5-1 victory.

TABLE tennis star Dave White was in championship form in the Lambert & Wade Malvern Table Tennis Championships lifting the singles title and the Division One singles crown with victories against Mark Jones and Dave Woodyatt respectively.

MALVERN Town extended their unbeaten run to ten games at home to Banks's Premier Division newcomers Heath Hayes but had to wait until the second half to open the scoring finally running out 5-0 victors .

LEDBURY Town Ladies FC won through to the final of the County Cup after a tense penalty shootout against visiting Hereford United Ladies. After drawing 4-4 following extra time and 3-3 on penalties they held their nerve to win 5-4 in the sudden death shootout.

MALVERN Athletic finally won their first Midland Combination Division One game of the season in their 23rd fixture when they were victors 3-2 away at second from bottom Chelmsley Town.

MARCH

LEDBURY Swifts defeated Tupsley Pegasus 1-0 in the Herefordshire County Under 16s Cup final holding on for victory after scoring with their first attack through James Dean in the 10th minute and then being under constant pressure until the final whistle.

MALVERN Ladies Hockey Club concluded a brilliant season with them coming overall top of their League with some fine performances winning 15 of their 18 matches.

LEDBURY Town won the HFA Charity Bowl with 3-0 with three second-half goals, two coming from the prolific Robbie Colwell, to lift the cup for the first time since 1980 having won it for several years on the trot before that.

MALVERN Rugby Club, who had headed the league table since the outset, lifted the Midlands Two crown at the first attempt with a hard-fought 19-6 away win against County rivals Bromsgrove who the previous Sunday had been beaten 43-13 at Malvern in the North Midlands Cup.

APRIL

TWO Malvern postmen created a bit of history in the Post Office Cribbage competitions for South Wales/South West Division by retaining their doubles title. Eddie Jones and Phil Veale became the first ever pair to win the title in consecutive years.

LEDBURY Ladies football team raced to a convincing 11-1 win against visiting Darlaston Ladies and kept their unbeaten home league record intact for the second year running.

MALVERN College pupil Naomi Setchell, aged 16, was selected for the British Junior Fencing team to take part in the World Youth Fencing Championships in Indiana, USA.

TOP-SCORER Chris Jefferson inspired Bromyard Town with a hat-trick to give them a deserved 4-1 after extra time victory over Herefordshire Premier Division champions Ewyas Harold in the HFA County Challenge Cup final at Edgar Street.

MAY

WORCESTERSHIRE Golf Club member Samuel Kenward, aged 16, a student at The Chase, won the County Boys Youth Golf Championship at Moseley Golf Club by one shot when he carded a net 76, five shots under his handicap of 11.

LEDBURY Town Reserves won the Ross A Cup with a 4-1 victory over Ross United Services. Going 1-0 down just before half-time Ledbury soon equalised through Leigh Phillips and Lee Clueit put them ahead before two brilliant saves by young keeper Andy Smith denied Ross leaving sub Steve Baker and Neil Gardiner chance to sow up the win.

MALVERN cyclist Liam Killeen, totally dominated the Tissot/UCI Cross Country Mountain Bike World Cup Junior race in Belgium for a landmark British victory. Liam's win by 48 seconds was the first win for a British junior at a World Cup race. Later in the year Liam won the gold medal at the European Championships.

SUCCESS for Malvern Town in the Worcestershire FA Senior Urn at St George's Lane brought them their first major trophy for over ten years. Conceding a sloppy goal just after the break, Town hit back with an equaliser from Dene Whittal-Williams to take the game into scoreless extra time. Town goalkeeper Ross Sanders was the star of the penalty shootout saving two attempts before Mick Lowe slotted home the winning kick.

BROMYARD Town were crowned Banks's Brewery League Division One South champions after a 4-2 win over local rivals Leominster at Delahay Meadow. The prolific Chris Jefferson weighed in with a hat-trick and laid on the other goal for Luke Johnston.

NEWCOMERS to the Sterling Classic Malvern Football League, Morgan became the inaugural winners of the President's Cup after defeating Club AC30 2-1 at Langland Stadium, Simon Rea and Andy Noon grabbing the goals.

LEDBURY Karate expert Carl Reeks, aged 17, returned from the WKO World Championships in Italy a triple World champion. Carl won the individual titles in the Point Freestyle Fighting and the Traditional Fighting and took top spot in the Three Man Team event.

THE Bull won the Sterling Classic Malvern Football League's Senior Cup 2-0 against Talbot Head at Langland Stadium and completed the League and Cup double for the second year in succession.

THE Three Horseshoes crib team from Little Cowarne, Bromyard, won the British National Cribbage Team Pairs Knockout in their tenth appearance in the finals. The team consisted of captain Les Jones and brother Dave, Eric Tompkins and daughter Tina, Gerald Coke and Bill Twinberrow.

JUNE

GREAT Britain gymnasts Robert Small and Kathryn Peberdy joined members of the Malvern Hills Gymnastic Club during the Community Funday to show off their tumbling skills and offer tips to the youngsters.

MALVERN archer Richard French, aged 16, a pupil at The Chase who shoots for Malvern Archers, was selected for the first time to shoot for the England Junior team. Richard was a Junior National record holder for Long Distance at 11 and U12 National Indoor Champion.

AUSTRALIAN Neil Holmes took all ten Eastnor wickets for Bromyard including a five wicket in nine balls spell that also included a hat-trick in a Worcestershire Cricket League Division Two match.
