R G Spencer (You Say, December 13) claims that the European Union is a threat to democracy.

Perhaps it would be fairer to describe the EU as a threat to sovereignty. Is this so bad? Would we really miss the sovereign state when it's gone, or could we just replace it with a European sovereign state?

As for the EU becoming "a superstate", why is this not an acceptable notion? It seems logical - Europe becoming one nation, or at least becoming a few larger nations, would surely be just as effective as a single small state such as the UK. The only question left is when will the rest of Europe become sick of the UK and ask it to leave?
