A MAN who wielded a chair and a table as he smashed glass in a Worcester pub caused so much mayhem the venue closed early, a court heard.

Karl Gormley had been barred from the Farmer's Boy in Tolladine prior to the incident, and allowed in by a new landlord on condition he behaved himself.

"It was about 10pm when Karl Gormley was seen to walk to the main area of the pub, pick up a chair and swing it into a window, which smashed," said George Shone, prosecuting, at Worcester Magistrates' Court yesterday.

"He then smashed the front of the pub's jukebox and used a table-leg to break five panes of glass in the windows."

Mr Shone said the damage was put at £290. The licensee decided to shut the pub early because of the vandalism and had applied for £150 compensation for loss of trade.

Gormley, of Tolladine Road, carried out the attack on Friday, March 3, while subject to a conditional discharge, imposed after he caused £400 of damage to a flat he had been renting.

He admitted criminal damage and breaching the conditional discharge at a hearing in the summer, but the court deferred sentencing for six months to see if 21-year-old Gormley was capable of turning over a new leaf.

"My client spiralled out of control as a youth but has grown up since then," said Nick Roberts, defending.

"The conditional discharge was ordered in January after he came back home to his flat one day and found people sitting watching his own television and drinking his beer."

Mr Roberts said Gormley had punched holes in plywood panels and scrawled graffiti on the flat's walls in a fit of rage at his landlord, James Bennett, who had installed the new tenants.

Gormley was told to do 80 hours' community service and to pay £440 to the landlord of the Farmer's Boy pub. Costs of £118 were awarded.
