Bishampton Utd 1,

Droitwich Spa 1

(Droitwich won 4-2 pens)

BISHAMPTON have only themselves to blame for going out of the Worcester Nursing Cup.

A mixture of missed chances, fine goalkeeping and a crucial penalty miss in the final 20 minutes of normal time condemned Bishampton to a shoot-out defeat.

The home team started much the brighter of the two teams and as early as the fifth minute Adrian Newbon floated over a good cross for Greg Mason to head into the arms of Droitwich keeper Simon Williams.

Droitwich's best early chance fell to Steve Walsh when a Newbon clearance rebounded and set Walsh clear and only a fine saving tackle by Stuart Hubball denied Walsh a certain goal.

The first goal for Bishampton came after 15 minutes when Mark Taylor broke on the right and crossed and Mason was on hand to slide the ball in.

This sparked Droitwich into action but their only chance of note saw Ben Evans hit the crossbar.

On another day Greg Mason would probably have scored five goals and he was always a thorn in Droitwich's side.

As early as the first minute of the second half Paul Hayden crossed for Mason to see his header well saved by Williams and the next minute Andrew Murphy had a goalbound effort stopped on the line.

Home keeper Rob Bille had to be alert on two occasions as Droitwich sensed an opportunity of equalising. And, it was no surprise when Droitwich levelled.

Bishampton failed to clear the ball long and Richard Goode controlled the ball 25 yards out before mishitting the ball goalwards and seeing it loop over Bille into the corner.

Twenty minutes from time Mason went clear of the Droitwich defence and was unceremoniously brought down in the box. The referee awarded the penalty and the defender was fortunate to remain on the pitch.

Unfortunately for Bishampton Tay-lor's spot kick was well saved.

A fine run by Hayden in the closing moments took him into the visitors' penalty area, his measured pass set up Mason but his shot was again well saved by Williams.

The visitors never threatened in the first period of extra time, while Bishampton again had the best chance. Young Mark Onens found himself clear in the penalty area but, saw his lob saw agonisingly bounce on top of the bar.

Onens twice had good opportunities to win the game for Bishampton in the second period but it was not to be their day.

Droitwich's only chance of note in extra time was five minutes from the end when a good cross by Steve Maddock found Nick West in space in the penalty area but his header went flying wide.

The penalty shoot-out again saw Bishampton fail to put the ball in the net and Droitwich ran out 4-2 winners.
