MORE than 40 residents were evacuated from a Stourport caravan park after it became swamped in four feet of water at the height of the storms.

Town fire crews helped lift many of the 44 people on to the back of a Territorial Army vehicle before it took them to safety.

The owners of the properties at Lickhill Manor Caravan Park, many of them elderly, were ordered to leave their homes by the emergency services.

Firefighters and army officials were first called to the park last Wednesday evening, and finished their rescue work the following morning.

A Stourport Fire Station spokesman said: "It was simply too dangerous for the caravan owners to stay on site.

"Power supplies to the caravans were affected by the flooding and evacuation was the only option.

"Many of the people went to stay with relatives and friends nearby."

A spokesman for the park said "minimal" damage had been caused to the site. He added: "The entrance driveway is on lower ground than the caravans so that took the bulk of the flooding.

"Very few of the caravans were physically touched by water but the danger of power supplies being affected meant we had to evacuate."

The caravan park residents were allowed back into their properties on Monday.
