WORCESTER'S first-ever road race will see members of the city council leading by example.

Three councillors - Geoff Williams, Neil Monkhouse and Adrian Gregson - as well as Mark Middleton, head of planning and development, will be pounding the streets, on Sunday, November 5, in aid of the Leukaemia Care Society.

The team, who have dubbed themselves the Mile Munchers, will be wearing their own specially designed shirts for the day, all hoping to make their mark in the 10km race.

"Taking part in such an event is a wonderful opportunity," said Coun Williams.

"It allows participants to get fit, have fun and raise money for a worthwhile cause. This week we are busy raising sponsorship money and limbering up for the big day."

The event was first scheduled for Sunday, September 17, but due to the petrol crisis at the time it had to be postponed.

Organised by Worcester City Council and sponsored by Volvo dealer, Johnsons of Worcester, the road race is made up of a 10km run, 5km wheelchair race, and a 3km fun run.

All the places for the 10km race have already been snapped up and organisers are now hoping as many people as possible will take part in the fun run - dressed in fancy dress if they want to.

"We are really pleased with the interest from the local community and this event looks like being a great success," said race organiser Amanda Smith.

"Apart from anything else, the day will be a great celebration of the Millennium for Worcester. It will be a great community event and raise funds for a well-deserving charity."
