MALVERN Town Council is looking for talented local people to entertain the crowds at this year's Christmas lights switch-on.

Anyone who can sing dance, mime or provide other street entertainment would be welcome, as would craftspeople who can fascinate passers-by with their skills.

Town projects officer Selina Saveker is looking for people to come forward. She is co-ordinating this year's activities and wants to get as many different groups as possible to get involved.

She said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for groups to exhibit their work while raising awareness of their group.

"There are a limited number of slots to be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis."

She would like to see activities taking place not only in the town centre, but in Barnards Green and Malvern Link.

Shopkeepers are also being urged to join in the Christmas window-dressing competition.

There will be categories for each of the three main areas - town centre, Barnards Green and Malvern Link.

This year, Mayor Davis Williams has suggested that businesses should be allowed to adopt whatever theme they prefer.

He said: "Those entering the competition will be judged on creativity, technical design and merit, rather than their ability to meet a specific theme."

Everyone who enters will be invited to a mayoral reception on Wednesday, December 13, where prizes will be presented. There will be first, second and third prizes for each area, plus an overall winner.

The date of the switch-on has been set for Friday, December 1.

The Town Council had canvassed opinion from local businesses on the options.
