I TRIED and failed to follow the logic in Mr Bywater's letter ('Standing up to road bullies', Postbag, October 13)

1. The fact that Mr Bywater's home was on a narrow 60mph country lane did not appear to be an issue when he bought and moved into the property.

2. He now feels, that a wider carriageway, repairs to potholes, pavements, street-lighting and improvements to visibility are needed.

3. The council has responded with a 30mph speed limit.

It must be obvious to Mr Bywater that those road users who habitually ignore the safety of others will take no heed whatsoever of this new limit and, therefore, there has in effect been no change. How can he express satisfaction whilst all stated problems remain?

This reminds me of the Three Counties crossroads. We have had a fatal accident despite the new traffic lights. Those who use this road frequently can see that only a physical barrier of some sort (e.g. a roundabout) will impact those who believe that the 'soft barriers' (traffic lights, speed limits) don't apply to them. A roundabout was declined on grounds of cost, but how many more lives will be lost before we get what's needed?
