WOLVERHAMPTON UNDER 16'S 12pts, HSBC MALVERN UNDER 16'S 20pts

MALVERN travelled to Wolverhampton with 13 men and two defeats this season.

Wolverhampton lent two forwards to Malvern, but this didn't stop Malvern working as a team.

The forwards attacked Wolverhampton from the start and after five minutes Martin Tilley scored a deserved try.

Wolverhampton seemed to lose their composure slightly, but they were the next to score on 30 minutes with a well-worked back move, resulting in a converted try.

The second half started as the first finished, with Malvern attacking and after five minutes Malvern were awarded a penalty, which allowed Martin Tilley to rediscover his kicking ability. Wolverhampton started to open the play by using their backs more freely, but Malvern's defence, although stretched, held and it was Malvern's Alun Lewis who scored the next try.

Wolverhampton were stung into action and, once again, the Malvern defence held them at bay for another ten minutes, but it was inevitable Wolverhampton would score.

From the re-start, an error by Wolverhampton allowed Martin Tilley to score another unconverted try.

Man of the match was a joint award this week to Martin Tilley and for the second week in succession, Mike Wenden.

Nic Dennis, once again made an outstanding contribution at full back, Alun Lewis and Wayne Downes were ever dependable in the forwards, the entire back row of Christian Edwards, Oliver Hambrey and Dave Baldwin gave time and space for the improving scrum half and captain John Tovey to choose whether to attack or to distribute the ball.

Malvern's new backs, Ben Walton and Rich Bridgens, fitted in well with the rest of the backs, Rich Younge and Dan Kay, and if they all continue to play in the same manner for the rest of the season, the Under 16's will have an even more successful season than last year.

Malvern's next game is in the first round of the North Midlands Cup on November 5 away to Birmingham Solihull.
