OVERGROWN roundabouts on a Worcester housing estate have been labelled a potential deathtrap.

People living on Warndon Villages say someone will be killed unless sprawling vegetation is quickly cut back.

Maurice Clutterbuck, chairman of Warndon Parish Council, said visibility is so poor, that he believes there is a serious accident waiting to happen.

"The roundabouts are a problem as there is a restricted view," he said.

"It is almost impossible to see cars as the height of the growth is dangerous."

Mr Clutterbuck said all six roundabouts in the area posed a problem to motorists and pedestrians.

"Sometimes when you are pulling out on to the roundabouts you are taking your life in your hands," he said. "Something has to be done, and done soon."

Warndon parish clerk Les Bishop agreed that the shrubbery was causing a problem.

"A couple of times recently my wife has had some near misses," he said. "Growth in the middle of the roundabouts are just too high and this is causing problems. I notice people are hesitant when they are driving because of the poor view. There is a problem."

He added that the parish council wanted the roundabouts in the area decorated pleasantly, but they had to be safe.

Tom Comerford, senior engineer for Worcester City Council's engineering and transport department, said he was aware of the parish council's complaints.

"The islands are on our schedule for maintenance and are due for a clip," he said. "We are also looking at replanting schedules, but cannot say when they will be going ahead."

He added that there had been no recent complaints from the public about the islands.

It is all right for me because I am over 6ft tall, but it must be very difficult for shorter people
