ACTOR William Roache, better known as Coronation Street's Ken Barlow, shook paws with Nipper, the famous black and white pooch, as the doors opened on the new HMV store in Stratford's last week.

Crowds packed round the entrance of the store, which cost more than £500,000, to catch a glimpse of the long-serving soap star, the little dog, best known for cocking her ear towards a phonograph trumpet in the record shop's logo and local radio presenter Tim Boswell.

While Mr Roache's hands went sore signing autographs for a long queue of fans, Nipper went walkies around the store and impressed everyone with her good behaviour, although she was sweetened by the thought of receiving her favourite chocolate treat, Maltesers, at the end.

"I am really pleased with the way everything has gone," said store manager Dave Dalglish.
