Evesham 57, Woodrush 12

Fielding a changed side, Evesham produced a dominant display to overpower a young Woodrush side at home on Saturday.

Woodrush withdrew from the league before the season started, but decided to honour some local fixtures on a friendly basis.

Surprisingly, it was the visitors who started the brightest, but with the static set piece, it was Evesham that gained the ascendancy in the loose.

No 8 Andy Jackson was making good ground on his runs at the heart of the visitors' defence and back rows Ben Whatmore and Neil Robinson were on hand to recycle good possession.

Soon the gaps started to appear and it was scrum half Chris Evis who took advantage when he sprinted through a gap in the centre to score Evesham's first try.

James Maude added the second after stand-in full back Fraser Colley slipped a pass back inside for Maude to sprint in for the score.

Woodrush rallied to score a try of their own, but Evesham were unlucky not to score further as first Robinson looked to have scored following a charge down from Evis and then centre Ian Hurley had the ball knocked out of his hands just yards from the line.

It was Hurley who scored Evesham's third try following a good interchange of passes between the centres. Hurley broke tackles to touchdown in the corner.

The second half saw Evesham score six further tries as the visitors faded. Full back Fraser Colley scored the first following a ruck in the visitors' 22. Two long passes gave Colley the opportunity to score out wide.

Chris Maritza replaced Jon Nettell and made an almost immediate impact barraging his way over the line to score leaving defenders in his wake.

Centre Rick Taylor added the next in a delightful 15 man move rounded off by the centre out pacing the covering defence.

Evesham eased for a moment and the ever resilient Woodrush nipped in to score a second try.

Normal service was resumed as Colley grabbed his second following a switch back move that saw him wriggle his way to the line.

Flanker Ben Whatmore added the next, his second in as many weeks. He was again on hand to get a pass from Maritza and then sprint in for the score.

Maritza completed the scoring following a good team move involving backs and forwards. Phil Parsons converted six of the nine tries.

In the closing ten minutes, Evesham managed to give veteran Bill Hurley a chance to revive his first team career with an appearance in the second row.

This week Evesham entertain the Old Cryptians in a friendly fixture, kick off 3pm.
