PLANT FOLKLORE: At the opening of the autumn season of the Chipping Norton Horticultural Association, on October 18, members enjoyed a talk by Jenny Steele entitled Soldiers, Sailors and Seven Sisters, all about plant folklore.

The title came from local names for thistles, greater stichwort and spurge, names she had learnt from her mother as a child.

She told of plants that were believed to bring good or bad luck, romance, a partner or having many other qualities.

She brought several books on plants and folklore and her other interest of wildlife gardening for members to look at and was thanked by Bill Turner, chairman. He announced that the next meeting, due to be held on November 15, that the AGM would take place followed by slides of Chipping Norton in bloom.

On December 8 the Christmas meeting would be held with a competition for the best hand-made Christmas card.
