HISTORIC Hartlebury Castle - home of the Bishop of Worcester - is unlikely to be sold off under radical proposals to crack down nationally on episcopal expenses.
Finding an alternative use for the ninth century building is proving difficult, because a third of it is leased until 2024 to the County Museum, and another third to the State Rooms Trust.
Nicola Currie, spokeswoman for the Rt Rev Dr Peter Selby, said plans to sell off the grade 1 listed building had proved fruitless.
She said: "We have been in discussion with English Heritage and the National Trust for a long time.
"The castle would be very difficult to sell because two thirds of the property are on a long-term lease and on public holidays the grounds are full of schoolchildren.
"At present, the church is not able to save money by moving the Bishop out, while still having to retain the castle. I am sure if a suitable alternative use was found the Bishop would move out."
