Rugby United 1

Evesham United 3

TWO goals by striker Dean Roberts helped Evesham United to their second league double of the season following Tuesday night's 3-1 win against Rugby United at Butlin Road.

It was another excellent performance by Phil Mullen's side and stretches their unbeaten run to five games. United's early season form has well and truly returned and Rugby were no match for the bouyant Robins.

United forged ahead on 13 minutes. Mark Wolsey made a great run to the byeline before crossing to Roberts who volleyed in an unstoppable shot from close range.

Steve McCartan's free kick fell to Paul West who shot just over and Roberts' low drive was only half stopped by Rugby keeper Jamie Cleland, but no Evesham player was on hand to add the finishing touch as Evesham United continued to run the home side ragged.

Full back Andy Smith made a terrific run before shooting just over, but on 62 minutes he sent an inch perfect pass over the Rugby defence for Roberts to run on to and beat Cleland with a powerful shot from 20 yards to make it 2-0.

The lively Robbie Beard touched home Paul O'Brien's free kick in the 78th minute to give the home side a glimmer of hope, but two minutes later United sealed victory.

John Deakin picked the ball up on the angle of the penalty area, waltzed past three defenders and curled a stunning strike into the top left hand corner of the net.

United: Beattie, Smith, Pendleton, West, Powell, Deakin, Wolsey, McCartan, Taylor (Pratt 65), Roberts, Preedy (Brown 82). Sub not used, Gallagher-Kennett.

Attendance: 204.
