The Stratford-upon-Avon Five-a-Side Football League

Biz Whizz 3, Betteridge Kickers 2

The Queens Head 12, Alveston 3

Biz Whizz took control of the Stratford five-a-side football league with a measured performance.

This game could have gone either way, but the difference between the two sides was without doubt Greg Warren. The Whizz striker made a nuisance of himself at every opportunity in the Betteridge defence and his tenacity paid off with an excellent brace. Neil Shotton made sure of the points with a bolt from the blue as the defensive rock thumped in a pile driver.

Tim Robinson and Paul Kelly hit the target for Betteridge, but were shut out emphatically by Biz Whizz.

Two teams who had opening weekend nightmares, The Queens Head and Shooting Stars, returned to the scene of their crimes to make amends. The Queens Head reshuffled their pack and came out fighting with an excellent performance against new boys Alveston.

Rob Hales' Alveston held the Queens Head comfortably for the first ten minutes, but once Simon Herrick's men had a taste for goals the floodgates opened. By half time Alveston were dead and buried and all that within 20 minutes of conceding their first goal. Luke Clifford hammered Alveston with a seven-goal blitz.

Dave Rogers, the talismatic work horse of the team, smashed in a four-goal volley to add further nails to the Alveston coffin with Jamie Young adding the other. Chris Spenser netted a hat-trick for Alveston, but his side were well-beaten by a team stung by their own malaise a week earlier.

Alveston did tighten things up in the second half, but once defeat had been accepted late on in the second half heads began to drop and three sloppy goals were gifted to the Queens Head.

Shooting Stars, another team reeling from an opening weekend hammering, gave Land Rovers something to mull over for a week with a humbling 19-1 annihilation.

Des Thurlby's men have made the early season discovery that life in the Premier league is tough and Shooting Stars were keen to press upon them that grim reality. It was a case of young guns going for it with Julian Bremner-Smith (seven), Sam Frost (six), Robin Jones (four) and Gary Banner (two) providing the ammunition. With Scarrotts game against their second team ATFC postponed both teams dropped a place in the standings, but will have the chance to claim top spot if they can win their next two game. With the potential of a second division of teams in the New Year Land Rover and Alveston will have to get points under their belts or face relegation by Christmas.
