I WAS delighted to read of Lew Hammond's plans to let the traffic flow freely again, but I have doubts that Oat Street would be wide enough, at the High Street end, to cope with two-way traffic. Another solution might be to reverse the directions, both in Oat Street and in Swan Street/Chapel Street, with a roundabout at the corner of Oat Street/Chapel Street connecting to Mill Street which would then be two-way. Other small adjustments would be needed, such as reversing the entry and exit of the bus yard outside the bingo hall, and putting a short-time traffic light at the bottom of Mill Street so cars waiting to cross into the car park did not cause a tailback up Mill Street.
Oat Street being so narrow could be blocked by a breakdown. One solution might be to arrange for an emergency contraflow in Swan Street with signal boards re-dedicating the lane next to the Olde Swanne.
