BROMSGROVE District Council has pledged to make public the health and safety report into accidents at the Dolphin Centre, after criticism from a member.

The Health and Safety Executive had been called in to investigate after the centre, in School Drive, was evacuated twice for chlorine leaks, and then was gutted by fire earlier in the year.

Councillors at the meeting of the recreation, amenities and tourism committee rejected a proposal by Labour leader Cllr Peter McDonald (Uffdown and Waseley) to hand over the report.

But committee chairman Cllr Terri Matthews (Con, Furlongs) said that was because the report had not even come back to the council, so they were not yet in a position to make it public.

She confirmed that when it did return, anyone would be able to go to officers to see it.

Cllr McDonald maintained that the vote against his proposal would undermine confidence in the centre, due to reopen next month.

Speaking to the Advertiser/-Messenger, he said: "How can we assure people the Dolphin Centre is safe when the chairman of the committee refuses to let us see the health and safety report?

"I don't how we can regain the confidence of people if we try to hide the report."

Cllr Matthews said: "It's absolutely ridiculous. We cannot give him the document because we haven't got it.

"I have every confidence that the officers of this authority are doing their job.

"Cllr McDonald has the right to go to the officers and I hope he takes the opportunity."
