There has been some media coverage recently on the demand for a parish poll in Alvechurch wanting to decide the question of the euro.
The parish council was of the opinion that the demand for the poll was unlawful on the grounds that parish polls should decide questions of a parochial nature only, not questions that are of national importance.
Since the euro will affect Alvechurch in the same way as the rest of the country, then it was not a suitable subject for a parish poll and the district council has advised that no poll will be held.
Most parish councils, including Alvechurch, try hard to stay outside the political arena, yet in this instance Alvechurch has been dragged unwillingly into the spotlight to satisfy the disreputable demands of political mischief-making.
In this country we are fortunate that there are various ways open to campaigners to get their message across to the Government, but the misuse of parish council funds on a parish poll is not one of them.
Gill Lungley,
Clerk,
Alvechurch Parish Council.
