MAKIN Fisheries at Wolvey in Warwickshire was the setting on Tuesday for the British Telecom Zone Individual Championships. Local top rod Gary Booth (Matchbox) from Catshill took the top spot pole fishing chopped worms and casters at peg A11 on pool two for ten pounds of roach and the rest carp for 68-8-0 total. Runner up Ken Dentith (Chester) had 52-4-0 and third Don Grace (Hereford) 43-4-0.

The Starlets Veterans of Northfield were at Lower Broadheath's Old and Willow Pools for their latest encounter which saw Bewdley matchmen fill the top three places, headed by Brian Hill who pole fished breadflake up in the water at Willow peg 11 for 26-11-0, Stan James had a second placed 17-11-0 from Old peg 14, third Mike Millinchip 15-9-0. On Wednesday a close result was recorded at the Astwood Fisheries Bluebell Pool Open with Redditch angler Brian Williams (Astwood) leading the way with a pole and corn catch of 59-4-0 from peg 19, Mark Roberson (Stoke Works) was second with 58-7-0, third Roger Clark (Weoley Castle WMC) 19-5-0.

On Saturday the Mallards of Bewdley Open was held on the Staffs-Worc's Canal at Hinksford where Black Country matchman Joe Cotterell (DC Brownhills) drew just before the Wides by the caravan park, where he pole fished squats and pinkies for 280 gudgeon totalling 5-14-0, yours truly Tony Brunn (Ovation Leisure) took second place fishing same style for 3-11-0, third Denis Sumner (Woodwards) 3-1-0. The Moorlands Farm Open saw some hefty catches headed by Lee Nutland (Bristol) who pole fished casters and maggots at Bank Pool peg 19 for 125-8-0, Lee Richards (Tim's Tackle) was second at Meadow Pool peg 12 with 108-6-0, third Andy Robinson (Moorlands) 101-6-0.

At Woodland View, Paul Sibley (Midland MG) began his weekend campaign with a ton-up top catch of 100-15-0 by pole fishing chopped worms shallow at Deans Pool peg 24, Dave Hinton (MAP Starlets) was second with 73-15-0, third Tony Holmes (Slapheads) 61-15-0). Paul Sibley went on to win Sunday's Deans Pool Open from peg 23, with an 117-15-0 catch taken with pole and worms, long distance traveller Nathan Watson (Grimsby) took a second placed 107-14-0, third Neville Groves (Tim's Tackle) 99-8-0.

The Annual BAA Canal Team Championships saw 23 teams of five at Hinkfo4rd on the Staffs-Worc's Canal, and it was the Mallards 'Blue' team of Mick Rogers, Chris Gale, Pete Persall, Alan Biles and Bob Millward that took the title with a brilliant 16 point total, putting Cock and Magpies into second place with 27, third Good Intent B 28. Top individual was Pete Persall (Mallards) who was staked just below Bridge 39, where he pole fished a small fish catch of 4-4-0 with squat and pinkies, Trevor Wills (Good Intent A) and Pete Trueman (Cock and Magpies) were joint second with 3-9-8.

The Birmingham Civil Service AC Annual Contest was held at Elmdon Pool with Bentley Heath angler Jeff Foxworthy taking a winning 66-2-0 of corn fed carp at ten metres from peg nine, Mick Grimmitt followed with 48-14-0, third Dave Hicken 45-4-0. Kings Norton AS challenged Tidbury Green AC on the Grand Union Canal at Knowle, with Tidbury Green taking the honours with a 100 points tally to Kings Norton's 105. Fish were at a premium with winner Norman Pearmaine (Tidbury Green) needing just 14 ounces 12 drams of perch and roach with pole fished red squats from 17, Terry Morris (Kings Norton) was second with 14 ounces 8 drams, joint third Mathew Rampkin (Kings Norton) and Jim Pedley (Kings Norton) both had 13 ozs.

Club angler Pete Heaven upset the form book at the Moorlands Farm Open by waggler fishing casters and maggots up in the water at Meadow Pool peg 24 for 138-4-0 of carp, Kieron Rich (Tricast) took a record Island Pool catch of 128-13-0 for second place, third Mal Watson (Shakespeare) 87-15-0.
